WE PLAY FOUNDATION AT A GLANCE

A non-profit, tax-exempt organization, the We Play Foundation's mission is to promote human development through adaptive sports via engaging in research regarding well-being and providing funding for adaptive sports. According to the Capability Approach pioneered by Amartya Sen, human development and well-being can be measured by a person's capabilities, that is, the range of options available to that person to pursue what she/he finds fulfilling in life.

When a person is born with a birth condition or suffers an illness or accident that renders that person “disabled,” in many cases that person’s capabilities are significantly limited due to multiple barriers, be they societal attitudes or lack of accessibility. This may lead to a sense of helplessness.

The foundation’s purpose is to combat the feelings of helplessness by affirming through adaptive sports that individuals with disabilities can develop capabilities to engage in life, to say to the world, “we play!”

"As competent human beings, we cannot shirk the task of judging how things are and what needs to be done."

Amartya Sen
